“Das beste oder Nichts” (The best or nothing) remains the slogan of Mercedes-Benz and as is the case with this 300 S, it is absolutely true. In the 1950s, the Mercedes-Benz W188 300S Coupe was by far the most luxurious car on the market and boasted a quality that was unparalleled.

The W188 300S came in a few body variants, including the coupe, cabriolet, and roadster, and was a variant of the world-famous Adenauer. This series was first presented at the Paris Motor Show in 1951. Although the model was named 300 S, it was not until 1972 that Mercedes-Benz began offering models as part of the S-Class. A total of 560 units were built, including 216 coupes, like the one we have on offer here. With a weight of 1,740 kg and a powerful 150 hp engine, the car reached a top speed of 175 km/h.

The W188 was entirely hand-built and was the first car with power-assisted brakes, making it a car truly only suitable for the wealthy and celebrities of that time. Some famous owners included the founder of Haribo, Hans Riegel, Aga Khan, and actor Gary Cooper, so owning a W188 placed you in good company. The W188 was also beloved by royalty, but more on that later.

This type of Mercedes was often chosen in a chic and understated colour scheme, and this 300 is no exception. The very chic green colour is matched with a beautiful green leather upholstery. A stunning appearance that perfectly suits the stately aura of this Mercedes-Benz. Even before seeing the car in person, you can tell from the extensive documentation that this car has been in the hands of the right people.

A Mercedes-Benz 300 S coupe is a very special car, but this example has an even more special story. In 1953, this 300 S was delivered to the Dutch royal family and was owned by Queen Wilhelmina.

This Mercedes recently underwent restoration and overhaul work, making it a very good and beautiful example. The exterior looks truly magnificent. The old paint was carefully removed partially and repainted in the original colour scheme, with a lot of attention to detail. To preserve the authentic elements, it was chosen to keep and restore the original chrome and decorative strips on the car. The body is very well presented, as is the underside of the car.

Inside, we find beautiful green leather upholstery. Everything is very well-maintained and original. The leather upholstery has been recently reupholstered, as have the carpets, and both the instrument panel and the beautiful steering wheel are very neat and authentic.

Additionally, this Mercedes is in very good mechanical condition due to the recent overhaul work. The large three-litre six-cylinder engine delivers a comfortable 150 hp, delivered via the gear lever on the steering wheel. The engine starts immediately, runs very smoothly, and responds directly to the throttle. Driving the 300S, known as one of the most exclusive and expensive cars the brand has ever built, is a regal experience. The car drives, brakes, and steers exactly as you would expect from a car of this calibre.
